Rosetta Stone

Math Club

Students in 7th and 8th grade compete at the Blanchet Math Tournament in November (cost is $20) and students in 4th – 8th grades compete at the Shoreline Math Olympiad in March (cost is free).  After school meetings start in October. We are looking for coaches for the 4th, 5th and 6th grades. The curriculum is all written out and easy to follow; we just need adult supervision. Please contact Tami Martin (8th grade teacher) if you are interested.

Robotics Team

The St. Mark Robotics Team participated in the Robotics Extravaganza at Seattle Prep on Saturday, May 3rd. Sixth graders, Chris Jensen and Sammy Gallagher, represented the team in a 9.4 minute challenge and won.  Their on-the-spot programming and build performed the task better than 19 other competitors.  They were joined at the extravaganza by teammate Connor Hogle.   In addition, at the end of the event, St. Mark won the drawing for a brand new LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 robot which they can use next year at the regional competition. Congratulations!

This is our fifth year of Robotics Team which will compete through the First Lego League. Cost is $30 to cover materials and tournament fees. The team meets on Fridays beginning in early September. There is a limit of 10 students allowed on the team going to competition, but we are happy to accommodate others who are interested in learning more about robotics. Contact David Hogle (425-744-7292) if you are interested in this exciting opportunity.

Speech Team is a great opportunity if you love public speaking. The High School tournaments are fun and competitive and the emphasis is on positive feedback leading to improved performance. Speech Team begins meeting in October.

Time Commitment
One afternoon a week, practices are optional, but highly encouraged as we have limits on the number of students we can register for the tournaments. We are available from 3:15 to 4:00pm on that day to advise, edit, critique and encourage team members as you choose, refine, and practice your pieces. All team members must meet with an advisor and perform their piece before they will be registered for a tournament.

There is a $30 fee for Speech Team which covers two tournament costs and an "end of the speech team season" pizza lunch. Please make checks payable to "St. Mark Parish School." If your student chooses to go and is eligible to go to all three tournaments there will be an additional fee (not in excess of $10) assessed in late January.

There are three tournaments. Students may compete in all or in just one, depending on their schedules. The Bishop Blanchet tournament is in December, it is an all day event that ends by 6:30pm. The Seattle Prep tournament is in January until 7:00pm. The Eastside Catholic tournament is the first Saturday of February.

The following criteria will be used to determine who goes to competition in the event that we have more students than open slots:

  • All deadlines are met.
  • Attendance.
  • Use of time during the meetings.
  • Quality of piece/performance in late November.
  • Eighth graders (who are eligible for a scholarship) who have met the above criteria will get precedence if all other factors are equal.
