Dear first grade families,

I cannot believe how quickly the year has gone by!  Tomorrow will be the start of the 3rd trimester and the last 12 weeks of the 2014/2015 school year!

I wanted to give you a quick update as to what we are working on in our classroom.  In math we have been learning about time and calendars.  We will be having a test mid-week on the material we have covered so far and then will be moving into the topic of money.  The students have seemed to really enjoy learning about time and I have a feeling that money will be a very popular topic for them!  In reading we are continuing our daily phonics work as well as reading several stories a week from our big reading textbooks.  For each story we read we do a few worksheets related to it and then re-read it before taking a comprehension quiz on the story.  We have been doing a lot of work in writing on correct sentence form and we will continue this work for the remainder of the year.  Last week we finished up a writing piece on a game we like to play and this week will begin writing about our "dream machine".  In Religion we have been learning about the story of Jesus' birth as well as a variety of Lenten traditions.  We will be starting a brand new science topic in the coming weeks, New Plants, that I think the students will really enjoy.

Please look in your students take home folder for their Report Card which will go home with them tomorrow, March 16th.  The envelope will need to be signed and returned to me after you have had a chance to review the report card.  As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Ms. Allain

Dear first grade families,

I wanted to share with you some information about Valentine's Day next week.  There is no school on Friday, February 13th so we will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Thursday, February 12th.  Two students in our class have birthdays next week so we will not be doing a big Valentine's Day party with treats , as I expect to have treats during the week already due to the birthday celebrations.  However, your child is more than welcome to bring in Valentine cards to pass out for their classmates on Thursday 2/12.  My only request is that if your student is bringing in Valentine's they make one for each student in the class so that everyone can be included.  We will be doing a few other Valentine's Day activities throughout the week, in addition to passing out our Valentine's on Thursday.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Ms. Allain

Dear first grade families,

We will be starting a weekly homework packet this week!  The packet will come home with your child on Monday and will be due the Friday of that same week.  The packets will contain math, reading, and writing assignments directly related to what we are working on in class that particular week.  There will be a variety of work pages for each subject.  The idea is for the students to do a little of the packet each night so they are not overwhelmed with the work but are able to get additional practice on the material while slowly easing them into the concept of homework.

I have talked with the students about the homework packet so they are familiar with it.  I will make sure each Friday morning when the students come into class that I ask them to turn in their homework packet with their reading log for the week.  Just like with the weekly reading logs I will be keeping track of who completes and turns in their homework packet.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Ms. Allain
